Most of us have seen the headlines about product shortages, staffing issues and service hang ups happening all across the globe. At best, it's an inconvenience during regular consumer buying times, but for parents and educators who are making plans for the holiday gift giving season, it can be causing a bit of anxiety. We are entering a time of year that is often stressful enough, and it now may be further exacerbated by the possibility that holiday gift lists may not be fulfilled.

As a result of these unpresented times, many parents and educators have gotten creative in their gift giving strategy.  Some ideas they have include annual memberships, subscriptions, or education-based games and toys that continue to give throughout the year.  Some experts are saying that the surprise a child experiences when receiving a gift with a little more meaning behind it, creates a memory that lasts a lifetime.  Below are some affordable, exciting and memorable gift ideas for the whole family!

Memberships & Subscriptions

Fuel your child’s passions with an annual membership to a local zoo, science center or natural history museum. There are also activity-based subscriptions that can be purchased and scheduled to arrive at the child's home every month.  An even simpler, but impactful idea is to make a trip to your local library to sign a child up for their very own library card.

Education-based Games and Toys

There is no better gift than the gift of education! There are many learning apps out there that are designed to engage children while teaching them fundamentals in reading, math and science.  Our favorite is Lou Adventures which teaches reading strategies for kids and offers reading tips for parents. This app takes kids on a fun, virtual adventure while improving reading comprehension and fluency. This fun and engaging gift idea is one they will treasure far beyond the holiday season.

Explore The Holidays in Your Own Community

Some of the simplest things that we experience during the holidays are often the most memorable.  Some activities are free or available for a small fee including ice skating at a local outdoor rink, sledding, driving or walking through holiday light displays, attending a holiday themed play, or simply strolling along your local shopping district to check out the holiday window displays. Many cultural institutions even have discounted or free days and events that can enrich the entire family.

Go on a New Adventure

For families who are especially adventurous, consider things like winter camping, kayaking through a chilly river or snowshoeing through a County/State park. What ever you choose to do, be sure to do it together!
