Reading is an essential skill that starts to develop as early as six months old. It starts when spoken words are broken down into sounds that soon have meaning. Later, they recognize that letter shapes relate to those sounds, giving them a whole new meaning and purpose. All this feeds into early literacy which happens alongside consistent instruction and practice.

As literacy skills develop, many children will use their natural curiosity to explore books and online applications with visually stimulating images and stories. When children learn to follow a story their love for reading and curiosity of what comes next will grow along with it. This is where the path to literacy really begins to take off.

It has been reported that emotional engagement is the key to a lifelong love of reading.  If a child has a positive experience either at home or in the classroom, it will continue throughout their lifetime. Some of the ways to inspire early reading include adult modeling, finding ways to make reading fun and giving young readers options to explore subjects of interest.

Utilizing an interactive reading app that engages children through visual storytelling, and a goal-oriented, problem-solving adventure, keeps children wanting more. The Lou Adventures app is appropriate for children in grades 2nd - 4th who are independent readers, moderate readers, or reluctant readers. This app can also be a useful tool for parents & caregivers who prefer to read alongside the child.

One of the strategies to build reading comprehension is to first read to the child, and then allow the child to read back.  The Lou Adventures app does this by using voice recognition technology.  This improves reading comprehension skills and fluency, which ultimately builds a child’s confidence in reading.  Achieving a goal at each level is what advances them to the next adventure. This hooks them on the story and reels in even the most reluctant reader to keep the story going.  Lou the talking dog brings the online story to life by guiding the child through the story on a virtual adventure.

Regardless of whether your child needs to have books pried out of their hands, or struggles to gain skills or maintain interest, reading apps can help your child find the key to successful reading while having fun on an online adventure!
