It’s back to school season and many parents are sending their kids to the classroom with an unknown amount of “summer slide”.  Although this doesn’t affect every student, it is something that many parents and teachers take into consideration as the new school year begins.  The term “summer slide” means a decline in reading and academic skills over the summer months when school is not in session. One of the ways that parents help combat this decline is by offering online learning games to engage kids in reading and other academic skills.

The right iPad application like Lou Adventures, guides kids through reading comprehension games, improving reading fluency, critical thinking and listening skills. This app uses speech recognition technology in a virtual, immersive world to solve a mystery with Lou the dog.  There is a virtual tutor that helps kids build reading and comprehension skills.

Lou Adventures is perfect for kids in grades 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. For kids who love to read, it gives them a new way to elevate their comprehension skills while enhancing their love of reading.  For kids who struggle with reading or have a lower interest in reading, this app engages them with interactive story games that improve reading comprehension and fluency.

A seven-year-old user said, “Lou the dog makes reading so much fun that I forget that I’m actually learning!” This is a true testament to how reading apps improve all the skills that create strong reading skills, and ultimately develop a love of reading. One of the great benefits of a reading app is the focus on reading comprehension.

When we asked a Reading Specialist from Troy School District in Michigan about reading apps and how she felt it benefitted young readers, she responded “It is a great app, I really like how it guides the child through an animated adventure to keep them engaged in the story.  I really appreciate how the text is read by the child first, then the app reads it back to them so they can recognize words they may have mis-read.  This is a great way to build comprehension skills page by page.”

A love of reading begins with an emotional attachment and modeling by adults.  It is enhanced by keeping the child's interest amid numerous distractions in a young reader's world.  An online reading app helps children stay engaged while embarking on a virtual reading adventure that is designed to enhance critical thinking skills, reading comprehension strategies, and reading fluency.  Give the child(ren) in your life the gift of a reading adventure by introducing them to Lou Adventures today!
