While summer break helps your kids recharge away from the classroom, it can also be a time for learning loss. To beat the summer slide, you must be creative in challenging your kids to keep up their reading habits over summer break.

Here are five fun ways to keep your kids reading this summer.

1. Play games as a family.
Turn family game night into a reading exercise. Choose games that are new to your family and have your child read the instructions. Allow them to be the leader and set up the game for everyone. Have your child instruct others on how to play the game. Choose more story-based games that require a bit of reading and planning throughout. This way, you keep everyone entertained while boosting your child’s reading progress.

2. Concentration and Focus
If you’re hitting the road this summer, turn your trip planning into an activity for your child. Allow children to be involved in planning — from researching where you’ll eat to where you’ll sleep. Read up on the location you’re visiting together, and let kids choose things they want to do when you get there. This helps your child continue reading while getting excited about the upcoming trip.

3. Create a scavenger hunt.
A scavenger hunt is perfect for getting your kids moving and reading! Choose a prize — the buried treasure — and write clues to lead your kids on a hunt to find it. Write clues that force your children to read and think before finding the next clue and, ultimately, the treasure. Whether your hunt is inside the house or in the backyard, it will be an adventure for everyone involved. Involving your child in the cooking process from start to finish will expose them to a different kind of learning — and maybe instill a new passion!

4. Make a new recipe.
Summer is a great time to try out new meals. Like arts and crafts, cooking is a great way to express creativity, so your kid will likely enjoy helping cook up the meal for the family. Grab a new cookbook and read it together, noting all the meals your family might like. When it comes time to cook, let your child read the instructions and help measure things according to the recipe.

5. Join a book club.
Group or buddy reading is a super fun and easy way to keep the kids excited about reading all summer long. Whether you are reading in a group of friends or joining in on the fun at the local library, book clubs motivate kids to have fun and explore what they enjoy reading.
