Creating Memories Through a Love for Reading

Reading Time: 2 min

A love of reading often begins early in life.  For many adult readers, they recall beloved books from their youth that created an emotional attachment to a simpler time in life. Memories of snuggling up with a favorite book, with or without treasured family members, to immerse themselves into a story that ignites the imagination. It all begins with that one book or genre that takes hold of a young reader, transporting them into a land of fantasy that sparks a sense of wonder & adventure.

Educators and caregivers often remind us that all reading is good reading. Kids should be encouraged by an “anything goes” approach by offering a variety of subjects and formats that will peak their interest. Choices can range from fiction, non-fiction, magazines, comic books, graphic novels, to chapter books and online reading apps.

Ideas to Foster a Lifetime Love of Reading:

  • Pick a new chapter book series

Depending on the age of the child, a chapter book series can be a great way to engage them in reading for a long period of time.  Much like the episodes of a favorite TV show, each book in a series has the potential to end with a cliffhanger that keeps the child wanting to know what happens next.  This moves them into the next book without delay.

  • Create a cozy reading nook or fort

To make reading time a little more cozy and fun, find a spot in the home or classroom to create a cozy reading nook or fort. All you need are some sheets and blankets to start creating!  For more relaxed surroundings, add ambient lighting using LED or holiday lights.  Flashlights and lanterns are also a great way to make a fort feel like backyard camping.

  • Find an online reading app that is engaging and fun!

Reading apps will delight the child in your life.  Lou Adventures is a great way to keep kids immersed in a virtual story while sharpening their reading comprehension & fluency skills. Lou the dog guides the child through the story and takes them on a virtual adventure. They will have so much fun, they won’t even realize how much they are learning.

However you choose to engage your child in reading, our advice is to always keep it fun! u associate the habit of reading with comfort, children will gravitate toward it, especially when bored or stressed.
