Creating a Cozy Children’s Reading Nook

If you find it difficult to get your kids interested in reading, it might be time to change your approach. One of the best ways to encourage your kids to love reading is to make it a fun activity. If you’re looking for a way to jumpstart the fun, consider creating a designated kids’ reading nook in your home that is both cozy and functional, and invites them to want to read. Here are some reading room ideas to help you get started.

Don’t overthink it.

Creating a reading nook in your home can be as simple as having a dedicated chair in the corner of the living room — or it can be a lavish, under-the-stairs getaway. No matter the space, giving your kids a reading corner that is dedicated specifically to their literary adventures will pique their interests and make them want to settle down with a book.

Display books for easy access.

When you stock your reading space, make sure to organize titles in a way that makes sense for your kids. Incorporate baskets, shelves, or boxes, and make it easy for your kids to choose stories on their own. This is empowering and can inspire them to read even when you’re not around.

DIY where you can.

Creating a reading nook doesn’t mean you need to spend money on lavish décor. If you can, repurpose things you have in your home like twinkle lights, pillows, crates, or storage. Make it unique and personal for your kids so they feel at ease. To get them engaged and interested in sitting down to read, let them help design, organize, and decorate the space.

Ensure proper lighting.

However you choose to decorate your reading corner, make sure to light the area appropriately. Poor lighting can negatively impact a reader, causing headaches and eye strain. While natural light is best, make sure to supplement with lamps or light fixtures so that children aren’t reading in the dark.

Make it unique.

Get your kids excited about their new reading space by letting them put their own unique twist on it. Let them draw photos to hang on the walls or give them a space to do their own artwork — like a chalkboard or a dry erase board.

Get comfortable.

No matter how elaborate or simple your reading nook may be, make sure it is cozy! Use blankets, pillows, rugs, or beanbag chairs to create an inviting and comfortable space. By providing a cozy environment to read in, you are helping your kids associate books and reading with comfort. If you associate the habit of reading with comfort, children will gravitate toward it, especially when bored or stressed.
