For children of all ages, hands-on play is considered one of the most effective ways to learn. Games, sports, and outdoor activities provide a place where a child can immerse themselves in imaginative play, set goals, and grow emotional intelligence. Hands-on learning, in particular, encourages children to plan, build, assess and reflect on something they created from their own imagination. In addition, it promotes critical thinking, creativity, hand-eye coordination, and a sense of accomplishment.

Children can learn lessons on planning, strategy, and achieving goals when playing sports, board games, or video games. With adult guidance, they can learn these lessons in real-time, and it helps them build problem-solving skills. Mayra Mendez, Ph.D., LMFT1, tells Healthline, “Play is important because it provides a primary foundation for learning, exploring, problem-solving, and building an understanding of the world and your role within it.”

Physical Benefits of Play

Physical play benefits children in developing fine and gross motor skills, imagination, and creativity. Running, jumping, swimming, block building, dancing, riding bikes, and climbing trees are great examples of physical activities that create a greater sense of independence and sharpen problem-solving skills & cognitive growth while having fun!

Social Benefits of Play

Play sets social expectations and rules while providing opportunities to share thoughts and ideas, listen to others, and compromise. These skills are often learned at a young age and carried through adulthood. Therefore, setting up a strong foundation for social interactions early in life benefits the child’s overall well-being.

Emotional Benefits of Play

Kids often process their emotions and explore new experiences through play. Processing emotions such as sadness, anger, and frustration can also be part of children’s play. As your child learns to work through these emotions, it encourages the development of self-identity and aids in boosting confidence and self-esteem.
