As summer winds down and temperatures start to cool, it’s a great time to get outside to read some of your favorite books.

I’m sure you often hear how reading together creates a life-long love for books and lasting memories. Likewise, it has been proven time and again that children enjoy reading when the adults in their life read alongside them — even better to combine reading with getting out into nature.

Here are some ideas on easy ways to get outdoors and read:

Bring books and magazines on vacation.
Taking a vacation before school begins is a great time to slow down and read. If the destination does not allow for reading, then time in the car, plane, or train works just as well. Plus, it’s an excellent way to pass the time on your journey.

Reading at the beach isn’t just for grown-ups.
Throw a blanket on the sand and snuggle up under an umbrella to read some old favorites. This is a wonderful way to relax while enjoying the sun and sand!

Visit a local park or beach with an armful of books.
There are many places to sit and read at parks. Under a tree, on a grassy knoll, or next to a pond. You may want to consider bringing books focused on ecology or changing seasons. You can read about your chosen subject and explore it in real life.

Don’t forget your own backyard:
Creating a reading oasis in your backyard does not have to be complicated. Grab some old bed sheets and pillows, and exercise your imagination. Create a make-shift teepee or tent and snuggle up to read some old favorites.

Wherever you choose to read outdoors, just know that it will be the perfect environment for children to focus and immerse themselves in reading. Reading in nature can help them relax and focus on the story. In addition, exploring literature outdoors allows children to explore in a new environment where their surroundings are incorporated into the experience, and their imaginations can be set free.
