Spring Break Adventures in Reading
Reading Time: 2 min
Spring break season has begun at schools across the country. Whether you are headed out for a long overdue vacation or staying at home with your favorite reading buddies, it's important to keep the excitement of reading going strong. The week-long break offers an opportunity to explore new subjects that can open up a whole new world of adventure for children, parents and caregivers.
If you are traveling, plan it together
Inviting children to help with spring break travel planning is an often-overlooked opportunity for reading. A road atlas or map spread out on the floor is a fun and engaging way to plan a trip. Find the states, city or country names that you will cross to get to your destination. Learn what the map symbols mean in the key. Look for mountain ranges, state parks and landmarks that you might pass on the way. If you are driving, this might give you some ideas on where to stop on your journey to enhance your travel experience.
If you are staying home, make reading a family affair
One proven way to get children to read during spring break, or any time of year, is to find a cozy spot, turn off distractions and read together. There are a few ways to do this, but our favorite method is to choose a book that is appropriate for the youngest reader in your group. When it's time to sit down to read, each person takes a turn reading 2 to 4 pages out loud. This helps improve reading fluency and comprehension for the children, and gives the parents or caregivers the opportunity to connect through the power of reading.
Keep kids engaged with an online reading app
Online reading apps are another great way to keep young readers interested and engaged in reading during spring break. Whether traveling by train, plane or automobile, Lou Adventures is a fun way to pass the time by taking children on a virtual adventure while increasing reading fluency and comprehension. No matter how it happens, opening up a world of adventure will help create a lifetime love of reading.
