We all know at least one or two kids who are fixated on a specific topic or passion that goes beyond simple curiosity. These children are unique in thought, spirit, and personality. They bring new meaning to the term “thinking outside the box” but in a very focused way.

Kids like these are sometimes referred to as “pre-focused” because they have strong determination, love, and passion for a specific topic and relentlessly pursue their goals until they feel that goal has been met. The passion that inspires these children often fuels their future success by allowing for opportunities to live up to their truest potential.

How do you support a child who is focused on a single subject?

Simply show support
Leaning into a child’s field of interest is a great way to support them and their passions. Discounting or shaming the child for having a highly focused interest will only bring angst and stress. It's important to connect with the resources that will help them thrive. For example, if they are passionate about astronomy, there are numerous books on the subject, and a telescope may be just the thing to blast off to the next level!

Seek out programs that enhance their interests
Whether it's academic or extracurricular, such as cooking, look for programs that will help enhance the child’s interest or hobby, allowing them to learn & grow. If it's academic, check with the school they attend to see what programs are available to help enhance their learning of the subject. If it's extracurricular, check with local community groups to find the best fit. This is also a great opportunity to bond with your child by sharing their interests.

The best part is that it gives you and your child lots of new things to do together!

Build a network
Finding other children who share your child’s interests is a great way to build on their passion. A group or club focused on the subject can provide a healthy outlet for your child to learn and discover alongside children their age.

If you can’t find one, consider starting your own. There may also be some social media groups that exist that can connect you and your child with people from around the world who share the same interests.
