Online learning applications—like educational video games, reading applications, digital simulations, and puzzles—are a fun way for kids to get involved with their education. While game-based applications are not traditional learning tools, they can positively impact how children absorb information and are very beneficial to skill development.

Here are five benefits of using online learning games or apps for kids.

1. Apps make learning FUN.

Game-based learning programs can teach children the relationship between learning and reward, promoting their desire to learn. Apps that give children positive reinforcement for their successes through level increases and in-game rewards encourage children to remain engaged and finish lessons.

2. Game-based learning can help children build strong memories.

With specific actions and rules to follow in a game, children are more likely to learn and remember material in ways they would not come with a traditional lesson. In addition, with educational apps, children are learning AND playing—which can help kids stay engaged and feel more at ease about learning.

3. Learning apps increase reading comprehension.

When game-based apps include written directions and activities, they help children improve their reading skills in a way that is not demanding or boring. Learning games stimulate their minds and promote better reading comprehension by captivating their attention. By repeating the games, kids continue to sharpen their reading skills.

4. Educational games promote decision-making and problem-solving.

Playing educational games or apps requires children to make decisions and solve complex problems. Even the most basic games demand some thought and rationality. When playing games and using learning applications, kids are tasked with thinking critically and weighing their options before acting.

5. Game-based apps sharpen life skills.

While game-based apps help stimulate the mind and improve critical life skills. Games that require physical touch—such as a controller with buttons—help children develop stronger motor skills and improve their hand-eye coordination.
