Keeping Kids Hooked on Reading During Break

Reading Time: 2 min

This time of year, the classroom curriculum is overshadowed by the energy and anticipation of the first extended school break.

At home, we know you are balancing holiday preparation with keeping your kids on track, family visits, and more — all while preparing for the long school break.

Teachers tell you that channeling the energy in kids during this time is vital in keeping them on track with their literacy goals. Creating seasonal experiences that are fun and engaging will help your children get through the extended break without falling behind.

Keeping Kids On The Reading Train
It’s not new news, getting some kids to read during the holiday season (or any season) can feel like an uphill battle, while others do it freely and love every minute. Whether you have a reluctant reader or a voracious one — here are a few ideas to get you started.

Invite Them Into The Kitchen
The kitchen has many learning opportunities, especially during the holiday season. The most basic tasks can help improve reading and math skills while your kids have fun.

Lou Adventures Kids Learning in the Kitchen

Reading recipes, measuring ingredients, and learning about temperatures are all tasks that keep these skills sharp. And as a bonus — the more skills they attain in the kitchen, the more help you have all year round!

Try making cookies, homemade loaves of bread, or homemade ice cream!

Enjoy Story Time Together
Over the holidays, schedule time to read with your child. Remember to model good reading strategies as often as you can. Allow young learners the opportunity to actively participate by having them read their favorite holiday stories and pair the book with a writing activity or craft.

Add-on activities could include:

• Creating a book review to share their thoughts and opinions

• Brainstorm an “alternate ending” to explore new story ideas

• Draw their interpretation of one of the characters in the story

Don’t Miss Out On Online Reading Tools

Giving your child time to explore online reading apps might be one of the best ways to keep children engaged in reading.

Lou Adventures is the perfect reading app to explore a new way of reading. It immerses kids in a virtual story while sharpening their reading comprehension & fluency skills. Lou, the dog, guides your child through the story, taking them on an exciting adventure.

So much of what children love about books can be found in the Lou Adventures reading app. They will have so much fun they won’t even notice they are sharpening their reading skills.
